Creating a world-class train station

We're excited to share our early designs showing how Halifax train station could be transformed to improve access to the town and boost economic growth.

Around two million people use Halifax train station every year, and we have an ambitious target to see 50% more rail trips in 2026 than in 2016. Improving the station and the way people access it will help meet future demand. It will also improve the travel experience, create a more attractive environment and boost the local economy by increasing investment, jobs and tourism.

Top class leisure facilities for Calderdale

 

We're progressing plans for exciting, new leisure facilities in Halifax

We have explored a number of options for the future of leisure in Halifax and our chosen approach brings together both leisure centre facilities and a swimming pool at the existing North Bridge site. Due to the significant maintenance required to operator and update the existing facilities, a recent feasibility study concluded that the combined approach would be the most cost effective solution, by incorporating the existing main sports hall and viewing balcony.

Making progress at Salterhebble Hill

The work will reduce travel times, especially in the southbound direction, by widening Salterhebble Hill to four lanes; remodelling the junctions at Dudwell Lane and Dryclough Lane; improving access to the hospital in Dryclough Lane; upgrading each Pelican crossing; installing new traffic light technology, introducing improved co-ordination between the signal installations and improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and public transport.

Proposals for a Halifax Town Centre District Heat Network.

District Heat is a proven technology which is currently undergoing a renaissance in the UK thanks to national policy support. Initial work on a system for Halifax has returned encouraging  signs that this low carbon system could be deployed alongside other projects to support our historic buildings and help our local economy.

Halifax town centre (A629 Phase 2) scheme moves a step forward

The major upgrade to the town centre (A629 Phase 2) is one part of the Council’s work to reduce congestion on the A629 route between Halifax and Huddersfield and to boost the local economy, under the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund programme.

Councilor Barry Collins, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “Halifax is already seeing ground-breaking development, including the transformed Piece Hall and Square Chapel, the new Central Library and Archives and the upcoming university business centre.

Our new Central Library opens – the next chapter!

Readers young and old will have the chance to explore the new Central Library and Archives in Halifax, when it opens to the public for the first time at 9.30am on Tuesday 5 September.

This is the next stage of the remarkable transformation of Halifax Town Centre, with the new library opening next to the Piece Hall and Square Chapel creating a vibrant cultural, heritage and learning quarter.

The Piece Hall is open.

​At 10am on Yorkshire Day the bell above the west gate was rung by Hannah Cockroft MBE, echoing the first day of trading at The Piece Hall on 1 January 1779. The opening marks the transition of the management of the building from the Council to The Piece Hall Trust and is a celebration of the restoration and transformation of the Grade I listed building.

A629 Phase 1a start date announced.

Work to widen the A629 at Salterhebble will begin later this month as part of a series of works on the route between Halifax and Huddersfield. To minimise disruption during the works, which will start on August 21, a detailed traffic management strategy has been developed, with multiple individual lengths of highways being worked upon in turn.

Halifax Town Centre Public Event

Calderdale Council hosted a public information event at Halifax Town Hall on Tuesday 18 July. On display was the preliminary design, traffic model and artists impressions of the proposed transformation scheme for Halifax Town Centre; aimed at reducing congestion, improving facilities for pedestrians and increasing the amount of public realm.
